The Library Foundation of Hillsboro

Mission & History

The Library Foundation of Hillsboro was established in 1989 to generate private support to enhance the quality of the Hillsboro Public Library by allocating private funds to provide the extra margin of excellence for the City’s Library system.

Our Mission

The mission of the Library Foundation of Hillsboro is to develop, administer and allocate private funds to provide the extra margin of excellence for the City’s Library system.

The Foundation provides donors with an opportunity for tax-deductible charitable giving that supports public Library facilities and operations. The Foundation accepts and manages charitable contributions on behalf of the Library, including a permanent endowment. These funds are then put to use to enhance the Library’s collections and technology services and to support small-scale physical improvements.

Our History

The Library Foundation of Hillsboro was established in 1989 to generate private support to enhance the quality of the Hillsboro Public Library.

The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, separate and independent of city government. We raise money from individuals, businesses and charitable foundations to supplement, not supplant, public funding for the Library. The Foundation is governed by a Board of Directors that uses a careful investment policy to guide financial decisions. Since its beginning, this public-private partnership has generated more than 2.5 million dollars. Our successes have enhanced Library services and facilities, including:

  • In 2005-07, we raised $1 million in private funds in the “Library Takes Flight” capital campaign to assist the City in completing the interior of the new Brookwood Library.
  • In 2010-13, we raised $500,000 in private funds during the “Centennial Capital Campaign”, again assisting the City in completing the second floor of the Brookwood Library and making significant interior upgrades to the Shute Park Branch.
  • We have secured nearly $400,000 of a goal of $1 million for an Endowment Fund that provides annual support to the Library to increase its collections and enhance community programs.
  • We have provided funds for many upgrades, including improvements to the Children’s area at the Shute Park Branch Library; covered bike racks at the Brookwood Library; and enhanced technology for visually impaired patrons.
